Gluten Free Apple Pie

About the recipe: This recipe was modified from one I found on Allrecipes called Apple Pie by Grandma Ople. I modified it to be gluten free and dairy free, and tweaked the spices and technique to better suit my family’s tastes. I hope you enjoy it!

1/2 cup dairy free butter

3 tablespoons gluten free flour

1/4 cup water

1/2 cup white sugar

1/2 cup packed brown sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground allspice

1/8 teaspoon ground cloves

8 granny smith apples peeled and sliced

1 egg white

1 tablespoon white sugar

Double batch of Abraham’s Apron’s Best Ever Gluten Free Dairy Free Pie Crust

In a small saucepan melt butter over medium heat. Stir in flour to form a paste. Mix in water, sugars, and spices. Reduce heat to medium low and allow to simmer.

Grease a 9-inch pie pan. Roll out bottom dough between two sheets of plastic wrap. Peel off top layer of plastic wrap. Using the bottom layer of plastic wrap, carefully place bottom crust into the prepared pan and trim the edges.

Move oven rack to middle position and preheat oven to 425 degrees.

Place prepared apples in a large mixing bowl and pour the sugar mixture over them and mix. Gently place the apples into the prepared pie pan. Roll out the other half of the pie crust using plastic wrap and form into a lattice or any other decorative design that suits you.

Beat egg white until it is frothy. Brush the top pie crust with the egg white. Sprinkle the sugar over the egg white.

Place pie in preheated oven for 15 minutes. Lower temperature and continue to bake for 40 or so minutes until apples are soft.
